Lost and Found Page 25

My breath catches in my throat and I try to catch Spence’s eye again, but he’s deliberately avoiding my gaze.

“Did he write a song for you?” Amanda asks, clutching at my arm.

I don’t know anything about this. He hadn’t mentioned playing a new song tonight, and he’s been talking about the set list for weeks.

Spence nervously clears his throat and starts playing.

I knew it from the moment we met

But you hadn’t figured it out quite yet

  You fought that pull

  And you pushed me away

  But I always knew

  You’d be mine someday

I’m either going to laugh or cry. Maybe both. My face hurts because I’m smiling so big. He keeps going, singing about every milestone in our relationship.

  Grand gestures and movie scenes

  Monopoly games and champagne dreams

  You came around

And laid it out for me to take

It felt like I’d been sleeping

  But now I’m awake

In a room full of people

You’re the only one I see

  You never have to worry

  It’s just you and me

  You and me

He looks right at me as he sings, and it takes all my willpower not to get up on stage and kiss him in the middle of the song. The song is sweet but catchy, and by the second chorus people are singing along.

When it ends, I have my hands covering my face, in total disbelief. I’m caught somewhere between wanting to grin like a madwoman or start bawling happy tears.

Spence looks over at me and all I can do is shake my head and smile at him. He grins his Christmas morning grin when he sees the look on my face.

The rest of the show goes by in a blur and I can’t wait for Spence to get off the stage. They play their last song, one Lucas wrote a few months ago that turned out to be a huge hit. Before Spence can even take his guitar off I’m leaping into his arms, pressing my mouth to his.

“You’re amazing, did you know that?” I tell him.

  “Yes, I did,” he says.

  “And so humble.”

“I am the most humble,” he says, throwing an arm around my shoulder as we head toward the bar. “So you liked your song?”

“Spence, that was incredible. I didn’t think you could top our first date, but you did,” I say.

He shrugs, embarrassed. “What can I say? Love makes you do crazy things.”

We stop in front of the bar. “I think I love when love makes you do crazy things,” I tell him.

“And I think I love you,” he says, putting his hands on my waist.

“I know I love you,” I tell him, and he leans down to kiss me, deep and slow.

I heard someone say once that knowing you’re in love with someone is like light—for some people, it’s a light switch. It flicks on, you have light. You see them, you know. And for others, it’s more like a sunrise. Indistinguishable at first. Light coming so gradually that you almost don’t notice and then all of a sudden, you find yourself in the full bright sun.

For the longest time I felt like I was lost. And now, here with Spence, I’ve finally found the sunlight.
